Energy storage news - February 12th, 2021

This week’s TOP 5 features news about the big battery announcement by CEP Energy in Australia, the construction of two storage projects in the UK by Smart Metering Solutions, the go-live of a DC-coupled solar-plus-storage plant in Hokkaido, the contract for a 10 MW BESS awarded to Wartsila in Mexico and the addition of a storage component to a thermal plant to provide frequency control in Slovakia.

  1. CEP Energy plans to build a large battery storage system which power rating could reach 1200 MW, to be located in the Hunter region, in New South Wales.

  2. British firm SMS has started the construction works on two grid-scale battery projects in the UK, totaling a capacity of 90 MW.

  3. Storage solution supplier Sungrow energized a 21 MWh battery coupled to a solar plant in Japan.

  4. Wärtsilä will supply a 10 MW storage system which is to be installed on a 50 MW wind farm in Mexico.

  5. Veolia's gas power plant in Slovakia will benefit from a 5 MW battery system supplied by Leclanché to deliver secondary frequency control to the grid.
